Greening Uganda Schools Campaign Takes Root in Kabarole
The Greening Uganda Schools campaign, initiated by PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) Uganda, is making significant strides in Kabarole District. The initiative aims to plant one million trees in primary and secondary schools, promoting environmental conservation and discipline among children.
“We are creating a canopy of trees in Kaboyo,” said Mwesige Julius, Environment Teacher at Kaboyo Primary School, expressing gratitude to PLANE and Natural Resource Defence Initiative (NRDI) for distributing tree seedlings. This vision aligns with PLANE’s goal of instilling a sense of responsibility and respect for nature among young minds.
Mr. Sunday Sam Bagorogoza, Head Teacher of New Valley Junior School, thanked PLANE for the Greening Uganda Schools Campaign, which has benefited their school twice. “Our school will be a forest school in a few years to come,” he said, highlighting the impact of the initiative.

In a bid to build climate-resilient communities, PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) in partnership with Natural Resource Defence Initiative (NRDI) embarked on a tree-planting project in schools across Kabarole District. The initiative, dubbed “Greening Uganda Schools,” aims to educate children on the benefits of trees in combating climate change effects.
PLANE Staff happy to see the trees planted in October 2023 at Kaboyo Primary School have grown and doing well.
On Friday, PLANE distributed trees to schools Mugusu Town Council, Karago Town council and Kicwamba sub-county, Kabarole District. This exercise is part of a broader effort to promote environmental conservation and sustainability.
According to Waddell Stephen Ainganiza, Founder and Executive Director of PLANE, human activities have significantly degraded the environment, leading to reduced forest cover. “We are using children to plant trees, educating them to value and respect nature for a brighter future,” he emphasized.
Waddell expressed delight in learning that trees planted in October 2023 had grown well, commending Madam Jane Katusabe, Head Teacher of Kaboyo Primary School in Mugusu Town Council, for her school’s efforts in nurturing the trees.
Pupils are also embracing the campaign. Ayebale Joyce, a pupil at New Valley Junior School, said, “PLANE has empowered us in tree planting and environment conservation.” The children showcased their creativity by reciting poems that highlighted the importance of tree planting and environmental conservation.

Through this campaign, PLANE Uganda is not only promoting a greener environment but also shaping the values and attitudes of young people towards nature. “Through this initiative, PLANE and NRDI aim to empower young minds with knowledge on environmental conservation and promote sustainable practices for a greener Uganda,” Said Waddell. He added, “We’re seeking partnerships with other institutions and individuals to enable us to reach more communities and schools to have a climate resilient community in the future. When we empower the young children today, we shall have an environmentally friendly empowered generation”.
Mr.Waddell appreciated the GlobaGiving support and donors especially the anonymous donor who donated to the Greening Uganda Schools Campaign on GlobalGiving. We are grateful for your kindness and generosity.
The project will continue next week in Kibasi and Kijura Town Councils before the schools break off for holidays on 2nd May 2025.
