Bundibugyo district, Western Uganda is overwhelmed by the high cases of malnutrition among the babies and mothers, something that requires an immediate intervention to save the lives of hundreds battling with the disease in Bundibugyo hospital and in the communities.
Most people in Bundibugyo have preferred growing cocoa than food crops to improve their income.
This has become a big challenge thus contributing to the high number of malnourished children in the remote district of Western Uganda.
According to the Nutrition Focal Person Bundibugyo Hospital Rosset Kabafumu, the malnutrition among the children is caused by the poor standards of leaving and abandoning of the cultivation of the food crops.
She narrates that most of the mothers are single mothers and majority of the house wives depend on cultivating cocoa instead of growing crops for food consumption.
Kabafumu adds that in the months of June, July and August 2018, the hospital received high cases of malnutrition adding that this happens when Cocoa season is off.
She explains that most single parents don’t have money to cater for their children while others have the tendency of winning off their children early enough to prepare for the next pregnancy
Most of the malnourished clients received at the hospital are children and adults most of them are HIV Positive and chronic illnesses but for the children they have 2 types of malnutrition either sever and moderate acute malnutrition adding that of the children admitted in the wars are malnourished with some complications
Nyombi Frank hailing from Kabale village Bundibugyo district who was attending his 2-year-old daughter Namukasa Peace explains that the mother abandoned the child at home when he was away for work.
He is appealing for support from the public and NGOs to bring back the life of his daughter.
Bundibugyo district is the largest producer of cocoa in Uganda, accounting for unprocessed beans worth UGX:90 billion annually.
