Campaign Purpose
The purpose of this crowdfunding campaign is to raise $9,000 to fight the staggering amount of abuse and pregnancy cases of teenage girls during the Covid-19 lockdown in Uganda.
Globally, COVID‐19 lockdowns have put children, especially girls under threat of sexual, physical and emotional abuse and neglect.
Uganda has implemented one of the most stringent lockdowns, while banning transportation, social gatherings and closing schools, markets and places of worship.
The lockdown has affected more than 15 million Ugandan children and young adults attending kindergarten, primary, secondary school along with colleges and universities. Now they are forced to be prisoners in their own homes all over the country.
Data gathered from government and child welfare organizations indicates that the psychosocial impacts of COVID‐19 have very adversely affected the living conditions of children, especially girls, limiting their access to basic needs such as food, education and health care.
There is a lack of social support, thus putting children at an increased risk of different forms of child abuse. Since the beginning of the COVID‐19 lockdown in Uganda in March 2020, there has been an increase in child abuse cases, defilement and early marriages of young girls have been heavy issues.
Increased terrible cases of physical and sexual abuse of children, early marriages and child labor have been reported in different parts of the country. As a result, young girls have been forced to get married while the majority of the impregnated girls have been abandoned by the impregnators and the girl’s parents, due to which the girls have been deeply traumatized, developing various mental issues.
To strengthen child protection and to mitigate of teenage pregnancy and early marriage cases during the COVID‐19 pandemic, we have created this crowdfunding campaign to raise funds ($35,000) for enhancing community awareness by organizing radio talk shows, radio drama shows, and psychosocial counseling sessions with minimal but permitted numbers, early detection and effective management and referral of child abuse cases.
On Sunday 6th June 2021 , president Yoweri Museveni announced fresh restrictions as part of measures to control the COVID-19 transmissions in the country in face of the second wave of the pandemic.
Among the fresh restrictions, was the closure of all educational institutions across the country for 42 days effective June 7 as the ministry of health studies the situation.
However, primary and secondary school administrators say that learners were affected during the first lockdown and this is exhibited in the high cases of teenage pregnancies, early marriage, school dropout and poor grades registered during their examination.
